We all have our stories about who we are, where we’re from and why we do what we do. But many of you have heard before that your past story does not have to dictate your future. I am a true believer in that, because if you had asked me at the age of 19 if I’d be doing what I’m doing now, I would have said you were crazy.

When I was 19-years-old, I was totally broke, very shy, no confidence or self-esteem, and terrible in every area of my life. At the encouragement of my family, I slowly got my act together and summoned up the courage to take control of my circumstances. The turning point for me was when I realized communication was the key to success. If I could communicate with people, I would be able to accomplish anything.

When I turned 21-years-old, I had made a fortune – wealth beyond my imagination. I was successful, happy and business was booming. But then between the ages of 22 to 24, I lost it all. I worked so hard, accomplished so much, but I still lost everything. I then proceeded to blame everyone else and said things like, “It’s the government’s fault. My parents didn’t give me any financial wealth. My friends aren’t supportive.” The only thing missing from the list was me. Where was I? Why wasn’t I on the list? The moment I put myself on the list of excuses, every other excuse tumbled like a pack of cards. But this post is not about me; it’s about you.

You alone are responsible for your future, regardless of external factors. You are responsible for your life today and every day moving forward. The choices you make will determine your destiny.

What will you choose today? Will you choose the same thing as you did yesterday? What kind of results has that brought you?

In the simplest of terms, there are four basic steps to creating the life that you desire.

1. Know what you want. Take the time to really get clear.
2. Write it down. When it’s documented, it’s real.
3. Take action. Make a plan and implement it.
4. Do it again. Adjust your plan until you find the right one.

You can. You will. It’s YOUR choice.
